Title
Parasuram's Kerala   Welcome to Kerala, the southernmost state of India. It is a beautiful strip of green land, hugged by the Arabian sea on the west and by the divine high ranges of the Western Ghats on the east. This is a land of colors and festivals.

Sage Parasurama, son of Jamadagni, waged an epic series of wars on the Kshatriyas. Saddened at the wanton annihilation that he had wrought, Parasurama offered severe penance atop the mountain heights. In a mood of profound atonement the sage heaved his mighty battle-axe into the sea. The waves formed and frothed as a prawn-shaped stretch of land extending from Gokarnam to Kanyakumari surfaced from the depths of the sea. Thus emerges Kerala from the legends of yore.

The present-day state of Kerala was created in 1956 from Travancore, Kochi and Malabar. Malabar was formerly a part of Madras state, while both Travancore and Cochin were princely ruled by maharajas. An early concern for public welfare gave Kerala a head start, and resulted in the state being one of the most progressive, literate and highly educated states in India.
